《北辕录》云：“金国宴南使，未行酒，先设茶筵，进茶一盏，谓之茶食。”饮茶啖茶食，古来便是文人雅士的兴来趣事，且在唐宋时代盛极一时。
茶食是在茶道中分量较小的精雅的食物；是在茶的品饮过程中发展起来的一类点心；是包括茶在内的糕饼点心之类的统称，茶食既为果腹，更为呈味载体。如《红楼梦》第八回中，宝玉、黛玉和宝钗在薛姨妈家里聚会，薛姨妈摆出几样“细巧茶食”，几个人一起吃“茶果子”；另一回中描写贾母游大观园的盛景，喝茶时有各色“小面果”，不仅“玲珑剔透”，还有“牡丹花样”。
